Long, Low Growl

You also need to see the situation from both sides I think. Although you perceive that Cleo was only sitting there "innocently" what Triton saw was another cat staring at him... which staring is a threat in kitty language, and he had a toy he was enjoying and wanted to keep. Children are VERY possessive of their toys, you should share with them but there will be a tantrum if you try to take "their" toy away...

Maybe you can put a screen door on that door to the playroom so that there is more visibility of the other cat while playing or eating, but in a safe manner?

I've ran through this a few times, and most recently with Chongo. I couldn't help but just laugh as he doesn't have a mean bone in his body and generally is a pretty silly boy.

We have a screen door, and my husband is planning on installing it when we're sure Triton is healed from his neuter. He (hubby) even removed the old screen and installed a new one that's specifically designed for pets. It's pretty darned strong and I'm hoping it will withstand climbing better than our window screens did.

Loki and Freyja growl at each other quite often either when eating chicken ... "This is my bit ..." and when playing "it's my toy I caught it..." nothing nasty just letting the other one know "go get your own toy / dinner" it is a bit weird the first time as you look at this little cute kitten and think that noise didn't come from there ... Lol :)

Whew, that's a relief! The only thing is, he never did that until he saw Cleo on the other side of the door. His ears weren't back, which I know is a good sign! We wanted to laugh, but at the same time, were worried that it could have meant something negative toward Cleo. So, he was just playing and staking a claim? I can live with that! I notice that despite the fact that all 3 cats are rotated in the play room, they don't generally play with each other's toys.

Yeah, this sounds like what my kittens do if they have a toy they want all to themselves. And they also get growley when they eat sometimes. They never really do anything to back it up though, and it's pretty hard to take a growley kitten very seriously lol.

Nero used to do this when I gave him a drumstick. If Senna went by him, it was a really low growl. Senna seemed a bit scared by it but Nero would never do anything to Senna. He would also do that while I was close to him. I ended up petting him while he was eating, and after a few days he stopped growling all together when I was by him during his meals.

Low growls and nasally huffs are par for the course!
That's good to know! I heard the nasally huff for the first time just now. He saw Cleo through a crack in the door; did an extremely long, low growl, followed by the huffing. This went on for several minutes, then he flopped down on his side and stuck his paw out the door. What characters these SVs are! Had the hubby and me rolling! :roflmao:
